I was watching the Pulp Empire fan edit today, so I had to read Yoda’s words for the first time. Luke asks what is in the dark side cave and Yoda says, “Only what you take with you.” And then Luke straps on his weapons, which includes Anakin’s blue lightsaber. I never made the connection between Luke’s choice to carry in Anakin’s weapon and Vader’s appearance. Though there is a stronger connection with Luke’s bloodline to the Dark Side, having a “relic of Anakin” might have had some impact on the way the cave confrontation went down.
That’s an interesting thought, which I never considered.
He also took a great deal of fear with him and this is why I always felt Vader appeared to him as it was possibly the being he feared most. When he struck the phantom Vader, his head fell off and exploded to reveal Lukes face. I took this to mean that this would be what would happen to him if he didn’t let go of that fear (plus being his father, we now know it held a much darker meaning).
I had never thought about Luke’s emotions being brought into the cave before, but that makes sense, especially since Yoda was trying to teach Luke about the path to the Dark Side and how to avoid being seduced.
